Perched on a rocky spur overlooking the Rhône valley, Château de Boulbon has watched over Provence since the 11th century. Its crenellated walls, towers and ramparts tell a story of warfare, lordship, and hard-won peace.
A stronghold of the Counts of Provence, the castle long controlled the passage of the Rhône between the kingdom of France and the lands of the Empire. In the 14th century, it sheltered the court of the Angevin kings; in the 16th, it was besieged, burned and rebuilt in turn.
Abandoned after the French Revolution, the castle entered a long period of slumber before being rescued from ruin by a family that fell in love with it. Today, as a private estate, it opens its gates again to visitors, artists and celebrations — true to its thousand-year vocation as a place of gathering.
For twelve years, Dominique de Lavergne has been restoring Château de Boulbon. With the help of one remarkable craftsman, he consolidates walls, rebuilds staircases, and rehabilitates the castle's spaces season after season. This long-term effort also relies on the support of visitors, donors, and concert audiences.
